This day, the 1st of July.

The dawn of July 1st since 2008, has been one nerve racking experience to live through...
until 2007, that was the sweetest day that we, as married couple, could have cherished for..... the birth of our first child... on 1st july 1978...
July 1st.. the day, we can no longer make that happiness-filled call, to wish a happy birthday... the day, we can enjoy only re-living our memories.... of the day itself and all the subsequent days that followed for 29 years ... and the days that filled each and every year... memories die when they are not re-lived..... pleasant memories live as long as they are re-lived...
For one who just vanished from the scene in a flash, what thoughts can bring him back to our life...

The 1st of July..!

That day will come, no matter what…
Where can we go and show… our memories of
What this day brought to us, of joy, thrill and hopes…
What can we do to not face the day of 1st July!

That day will come, no matter what….
Where can we go and talk … our  memories of
What celebrations we had.. .year after year… of love, happiness,
What can we do to not face the day of 1st July!

That day will come, no matter what…
Where can we go to hide…. our memories of
What emptiness this day brings each year and for how long….?
What can we do to not face the day of 1st July !.

That day will come, no matter what,
Where can we go and bury … our emotions, our fears, our sadness,
What this day will no longer mean to us and all who care…                                 What can we do to not face the day of 1st July!

to you, my dear....
While our hearts yearn to see that smile on your face yet again,
While our hands stretch to hold yours that never seem to touch ours anymore,
While our eyes never go dry with your warm images we see as real,
While our senses tell us, all is over and only memories are real.

That day will come, no matter what…
That brought the bundle of joy, our son, who now only live in us,                                                                                                                          Where can we go to roll back those happy yesteryears, yet
What can we do not to face the day of 1st July !.

SHARED THOUGHTS...01.07.11

SHARED THOUGHTS……..01.07.11.
It's said, our eyes are only good to be able to see.... not to have a vision.. so be it, with our ears..., they are there to hear, but do we hear? .. blinded as we are in pursuit of things we know not, sometimes we cannot even hear the bell alerting us to the right path....
Two Horses

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it.

From  a distance, each horse looks like any other  horse.
But  if you stop your car, or are walking by, you  will notice something quite amazing....

Looking  into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he  is blind. His  owner has chosen not to have him put down, but  has made a good home for him.

This  alone is amazing.  If you stand nearby and  listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.   Looking around for the source of the  sound, you will see that it comes from the  smaller horse in the field.

Attached  to the horse's halter is a small  bell. It  lets the blind friend know where the other horse  is, so he can follow.

As  you stand and watch these two friends, you'll  see that the horse with the bell is always  checking on the blind horse, and that the blind  horse will listen for the bell and then slowly  walk to where the other horse is, trusting that  he will not be led astray.

When  the horse with the bell returns to the shelter  of the barn each evening, it stops occasionally  and looks back,
Making  sure that the blind friend isn't too far behind  to hear the bell.
In the hands of God, like these two horses, God does not throw us away  just because we are not perfect or because we  have problems or challenges.

He  watches over us and even brings others into our  lives
To help us when we are in need....

Sometimes  we are the blind horse being guided by the  little ringing bell of those who God places in  our lives.  Other  times we are the guide horse, helping others to  find their way....

God seems to tell us....Please  listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours,  and remember...

Be  kinder than necessary-

Everyone  you meet is fighting
Some  kind of battle.

Live  simply,
Love generously,
Care  deeply,
Speak  kindly.......

And leave the rest to  God!

FOR WE WALK BY FAITH  AND NOT BY  SIGHT

God created you and I to produce light in a dark world.

No matter how small we are or what color we might be,
Like a little candle, we all can produce the same amount of light.

It is always up to us, either to get lost in darkness...
or sparkle and show light to others.

Thoughts on 1st July.

Mail from my sister-in-law, that speaks for us, on this day…. the day that brought the bundle of joy, our son, into our lives, 33 years ago… thank you Thangu, this is deeply appreciated and I feel compelled to share this timely thoughts on our dear Lalit, who endeared himself to all those who knew him.

“Some years back we were all joyous as we were blessed with another addition to our growing family --on the 1st of july into our lives came a little angel --a child destined to fill our lives with laughter, love and happiness. We saw him grow & reach out to the stars ---a smile on his face , tender words on his lips and the most accommodating nature. It is so difficult to understand why fate had other plans for him when he was in his prime but there must be a very good reason for his return to a much better place of eternal bliss. We all miss him so deeply and see those unique nuances in his little girl & wonder at the quirks of nature --he is still with us in different ways --those moments that our stored in our memory-- of times spent together.
This poem is so appropriate & makes one feel that though his physical presence is missing he is still very much a part of our lives.
May we find the strength to face those memories with joy and fulfillment.

 I AM NOT THERE

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet birds circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.

Shared Thoughts. Journey to Happiness.

A journey to happiness
I wish to recount an experience I had in a Dubai taxi recently. The driver was a pleasant-looking middle-aged chap and he greeted me with a brief smile when I got in. While waiting at our first traffic signal, on our way to my destination, we saw a young couple on the sidewalk, hand-in-hand, immersed in conversation, going past the line of waiting cars. They seemed quite happy. The woman’s laughter could be heard in the cab. Little did I expect the kind of reaction, this sound of happiness stirred up in the taxi driver.

He asked loudly, partly to himself and partly to me: ‘Why was that woman so happy? How could a person be so cheerful?’
Such probing questions kept flowing from him incessantly. Since I was just silent with my own thoughts, the driver kept on talking, whingeing actually. She must be crazy, or so he thought, to be so happy.
Not long afterwards, there was a group waiting at the next traffic signal. They too seemed happy by the look on their faces. Their loud laughter and chatter caused yet another mini-tsunami in my friend’s emotions. As I expected, he came up with fresh questions….
What caused happiness? How could a person be happy in Dubai, he lamented; here he was, in Dubai for 20 years, struggling to make both ends meet, his wife back home in Goa, bringing up his two daughters. The sky-rocketing cost of living in Dubai had depleted his savings. He believed everyone else in Dubai had been sharing his tales of woes and yet, these folks seemed happy, really happy. This was unfair, he thought and rightly so for a person on whose shoulders the cares of the world seemed so heavy. How could these people be all happy and smiling? This was all too much for him.
I found his questions triggering a chain of thoughts in me and I decided to respond to his monologue.
These people, I told him, had decided they would be happy today. They had made up their minds that nothing was going to upset them today. He could also be happy if he wanted to, I told him. All he had to do was just repeat: “I am happy - rather than question why others are happy.”

I told him to laugh loudly. Laugh, I urged him. Laugh now, I shouted a command and then I laughed myself. I really felt nice. And I continued to laugh so loudly I could see his eyes were bulging out of their sockets with utter surprise. He must have thought he had picked up a nutter for a passenger.
We had reached our  destination by then. While paying for the ride, he asked me if I was all right. Obviously he still had some doubts over it. Then he asked a question I had not expected: “Are you really happy, sir?”
I told him: “Yes, I am happy.” In fact I yelled at him (and the world) that I was happy and then I went on my way, leaving behind a flabbergasted and perplexed cabby.
I then thought to myself whether I could justify what I had just told him, that I was really happy.
Well, if happiness is where my needs equal the means, then I am happy.
If happiness is lack of fear for today or tomorrow, then I am happy.
If happiness is where there is hope for today or tomorrow, then I am happy.
If happiness is where there is health, then I am happy.
If happiness is where there is love waiting for me, then I am happy.
If happiness is where there are many to love, then I am happy.
If happiness is where there is no one to hate, then I am happy.
If happiness is where I am wanted,  then I am happy.
If happiness is the absence of sadness, yes, I am happy still, because I am only grieving and past the stage of sadness. In grieving, there is a deep unfathomable sense of missing.

Since I have decided to be happy, I can only recall the happy moments of the past, even in my grief*.
So happiness is your choice, a surreal destination, existing out there somewhere, yet so easily accessible, if you just choose to look beyond the immediate.
(*We lost our only son in a road accident in India in September 2007. Grief and memories flood my being every moment of the day, even as I go through life, appreciating the goodness of God’s miracles in every sight and sound around me, wondering why one such miracle could not have saved an innocent life as his with so much to live for.)

Long...Longer....Longest.....words in English

Long …. Longer….Longest….

The longest word recorded in the Oxford Dictionary is the 29 letter word, coined humorously by Mr. Shenstone in 1741… viz

FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION… meaning “action or habit of estimating as worthless”.

This is a combination of Latin words Flocci, Nauci, Nihili, Pili & Fication… This word also means “setting little or no value”.

The clown in Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour Lost, uses the word.. HONORIFICABILITUDINITATIBUS…(27 letters), reckoned as one of the longest words in English.

In the popular English Musical “Mary Poppins” there is often an expression SUPERCALIFRAGILISTISEXPIALIDOCIOUS (34 letters)…

These words may not have specific meanings, that’s why they are termed only as an ‘expression’…

But then how about this? PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS (45 letters)… this is a compound word listed in Masters International Dictionary, to signify a lung disease, usually contracted by miners… a form of Pneumocniosis caused by very fine silicate or quartz dust.

This is not all. There is yet another contender for the longest word – see if you can mouth this 52 letter monster, in one gulp….
AEQUEOSALINOCALCALINOCETACEOALUMINOSOCUPRIOVITRIOLIC…

This word is attributed to one Dr. Edward Strother of 18th century, and it just means ‘spa water’.

For fun lovers however the longest word is SMILES, because there is a MILE between the first and the last letter.

Shared Thoughts. 18.06.11

SHARED THOUGHTS. … 18/06/2011.

Given below are beautiful two illustrations …
a.    This is a story which widens the process of thinking for solving problems
b.    Technical Skill is the mastery of complexity, while Creativity is the mastery of simplicity.....
======================================================
Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer
had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a
village moneylender.

The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the
farmer's beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain.
He said he would forgo the farmer's
debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer
and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the
cunning money-lender suggested that they let
providence decide the
matter.

He told them that he would put a black pebble and a
white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl
would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she
picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and
her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the
white pebble she need
not marry him and her father's
debt would still be forgiven. But if she
refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown
into jail.
They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the
farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent
over to pick up two
pebbles.
As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that
he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into
the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a  pebble from
the bag. Now, imagine you were standing in the
field. What would you have done if you were the girl?
If you had to advise her, what would you have told
her?
Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.

2. The girl should show that there were two black
pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a
cheat.

3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice
herself in order to save her father from his debt and
imprisonment.

Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above
story
is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate
the difference between lateral and logical
thinking. The girl's dilemma cannot be solved
with traditional logical thinking. Think of the
consequences if she chooses the above logical
answers.

What would you recommend to the Girl to do?

The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew  out
a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it
fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it
immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.

"Oh, how clumsy of me, "she said."But never mind, if you
look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be
able to tell which pebble I picked."

Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed
that she had picked the white one. And since the
money-lender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl
changed what seemed an impossible situation into an
extremely advantageous one.

Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only
that we don't attempt to think.

==============================================
Right thinking!
ONE of the questions asked in an IIM entrance interview.

Interviewer said "I shall either ask you ten easy questions or one really difficult question.  Think well
before you make up your mind!"

The interviewee thought for a while and said," My choice is one really difficult question."

"Well, good luck to you, you have made your own choice!
Now tell me this, what comes first, male or female?"

The candidate was jolted into reality as his admission depended on the correctness of his answer,
but he thought for a while and said," It's the Female sir!"

"How?" the interviewer asked.
"Sorry sir, you promised me that you will not ask me a SECOND difficult question!"

He was selected for IIM!

Shared Thoughts. Changing Fortune.

Changing Fortune.
Changing fortune Vs. Change in Fortune ? It’s either gradual or instantaneous. If the former can be termed as a gradual change, the latter happens without a warning, even within the flash of a moment…with ruthless impact.
The Changing Fortune is a measured, slow-but-sure build up to the finale…as in,
·         When the reigning Queen of France had to endure the dampness of  dungeons from the luxury of her palace, to be guillotined in public..
It was Thomas Carlyle, who said, To such changes of human fortune what words are adequate ? Silence alone is adequate.
·         The tragic end of the Romanov family, the 7 member Royalty living in ultra luxury to be shot and consigned to history.
·         The chief of a world renowned biscuit brand, retaining the millionaire status even behind bars, falling a victim to a mysterious conspiracy, death greeting him in the cell with not a loving soul by the side.
·         In recent times, we have seen numerous powerful leaders, heads of states, ministers whose arrogance matched their selfish motives, being swallowed up by the will of the public and now well within the arms of law.
An analysis of Change in Fortune, surprisingly reveal, a vast majority are lust and sex driven quests…. From the zenith of glory, to the abysmal depth of infamy… and thereafter living to cope with the disgrace and lost reputation.
It’s all about a mad moment of indiscretion… a sudden surge of adrenaline and before sanity is gained, there is the beginning of a heavy loss that triggers an avalanche sweeping in its way…years of perseverance, born skill, hard earned positions, titles given, rewards gained and awards earned .. et al.
Let’s look at some of the recent victims of only the consensual exploits, which served as accelerators to their reputation diving “south-east” –
·         A great iconic golf player who lost his family along with his status, while confessing to nocturnal escapades,
·         A high potential football player with years to play for, caught while ‘playing’ with the wrong field-mate,
·         A Marathon runner of world fame, plunging down to his death while fleeing through the balcony, from a virile state, just a moment before, when his wife made a sudden entry…
·         A two term Governor of a well known state, fathering a boy, within the confines of the Governor’s Mansion, whilst the family of four kids and wife now of 25 years are blissfully unaware,
·         And not so consensual - The ‘most powerful Frenchman’  in the world seated in a plane, whose destination changed forever, recalled to face charges of abusing the modesty of a maid….
On a different note, there are those who have survived the fall of fortune  – and lived to tell the tale, literally ; largely due to support in various forms…
·         The President of a powerful nation, on a juvenile exploit within the Oval Office,
·         Another President of an ancient nation, for his promiscuous & lavish life style,
·         A promising President material, whose ambitions drowned with the victim at Chappaquiddick,
The question so often asked by all of us who read these kind of juicy stories is “Why did he have to do that.?” … there is no answer, at least not just one answer… but let’s take a look from a different angle.
How many of us, the so called ‘puritans’ of the society, can be honest enough to admit, that we would look the other way, given the circumstances – of opportunity, time and inclination, not to mention wealth and fame as additional motivators to lure the opposites….. to that critical moment of weakness…. ?
Each one of us can look within ourselves and utter a silent honest answer, if one can succeed at all, to imagine to be in those circumstances. Honestly, in our normal and mundane style of living, there is hardly any scope available, given or affordable, in order to test our moral rigidity or flexibility.
The bottom line is not whether one can pass the acid test, but whether the family can cope with the change as the result –
those who dare, do not care. Those who care, do not dare.
Simple enough?
But the onus of burden to cope with the change lies squarely with the family… let the one who dared, be damned… but what care is left for the family? In ‘rich & famous’ cases, it’s the loss of reputation, whereas in several unreported cases affecting normal bread winners, it’s a matter of survival besides loss of face before the society.
For instance, the housewife who can no more hold her head high before neighbors and family, the kids who could be the subject of ridicule about their father, they held dear until then and so on.
It is this Change in Fortune that drives those affected to mental trauma, suicides, revenge attacks etc. It is imperative that in such cases, well wishes within reach, bring in professional counsel immediately, to ensure coping with this drastic change.
No wonder then, suicide tendency is the most anticipated reaction from the victims and accused alike, which is monitored by the authorities, where possible.
History is replete with tales of gallivanting ‘Casanovas’ … morality in high societies, is irrelevant then and now… and will continue to be….. and the burden of shame for the family at all social levels, then now and will continue to be beyond the Change in Fortune.
