SHARED THOUGHTS…24.08.14.
Love yourself. & the Love for others.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I received the below mail from a good e-friend Ram Ganesh ji.
“ The death of Robin Williams made me write this… I wish Robin Williams had
loved himself more.
All of us go through depression to some degree at sometime or the other in
life. Can bad childhood upbringing cause it? Too much control, abuse etc
could have caused low self esteem etc. If you are born gay and your parents
try to “make you straight”..
Some get over all such negativities by brushing them off. Are they
superficially brushing them off or are they plucking the roots also out?
Therein lies the rub.
Most of the time the cause of depression is “comparing yourself to others”
and feeling that you are inadequate.
We all know Robin Williams was a great achiever. Oscar Emmy,
Grammy…..Michael Jackson, Elvis, Dean Martin…..and scores of great names
were depressed and were on drugs, both legal and potent. They all felt
inadequate; Michael wanted to be "white" !
The advertising media is misleading kids with “boobs enhancing”, high heels,
fairness creams etc…we have to choose.
Our ancient Indian / Vedantic philosophy has the right cure for Depression.
If you are born with some deficiencies, don’t despair. You are here for a
purpose. Your body is not you. It is here to experience the karma.
There is no one like you in the entire universe. That alone should give you
high self esteem. Have you seen the guy who is on all TV shows (Oprah..); he
was born without arms and legs. He jumps from a high diving board and swims.
HOW? Armless people play piano with legs…..We are all manifestations of
Iswara (God); the Supreme. Iswara is NOT defective. Your senses see defects;
your soul is perfect.
You are blessed; because you can breath. No breath means death.
So long as you can breath, you have a purpose. Iswara loves you and wants
you to serve others in greater difficulty than you are, till your last
breath. You will not get depressed if you really LOVE everyone. To love
everyone, you must love yourself. If you love yourself how can you harm
yourself or commit suicide?
I wish Robin Williams had loved himself more”.

Well said Ram ji. The problem is, it is easy to love others more than
oneself. How else can one explain self infliction on our health, by habits
that are damaging – smoking, drugs, excessive drinking, just being unable to
exercise.. in all such cases, submitting meekly to ‘mind is willing, but
flesh is weak’ syndrome !! Yet, these persons are capable of loving others
among family & friends.
These killer habits have such strong hold on a person addicted to its
(dis)pleasures, that it requires much stronger will and desire to love
oneself, in order to overcome its grip. It is obviously nice to lie a bit
longer in the comfort of one’s bed rather than venturing out in the open for
that jog or walk or a workout. What motivates people to do so is surely
concern for one’s health .. in other words, love for oneself.
I think loving oneself first, enables one to be the best version of yourself
to others, just as we would like to be seen in our best attire. Ability to
love oneself gives a higher self esteem and less inferiority complex before
others. I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said, no one can make you feel
inferior, without your consent.
Loving oneself, means, one does not give this consent. Simple.

bad day when he made you... If you don't love yourself in the right way, you
can't love your neighbour. You can't be as good as you are supposed to

So much for loving oneself. Now what about loving others.. and the
remarkable extreme extent to which people can show their love and concern
for others. If one of the reasons for committing suicide is as a result of
depression and hate for oneself, the other end of the spectrum is selfless
love and concern for others, that can cut across all forms of human classes
of nationality, colour, caste, creed, religion et al.
In recent years, kleptocratic and nepotistic behavior by the local
governments have led to long civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone; these
are places where the social fabric has been ripped apart, and trust between
those in power and ordinary people is almost absent.
Health services, which barely exist in many places, are shunned because the
unsanitary conditions of hospitals and health centers have made them hubs
for the spread of the virus. Many hospital staff -- already underpaid and
ill-equipped -- have become victims themselves. Foreign health workers sent
to help are ignored and even chased away by scared locals. A group of
Liberians explained recently that they think Ebola is a ploy by the
government to steal even more money from Western donors.
What is it, that makes American doctors and health workers from the Western
countries to willingly camp in such abysmal civil conditions, fearful
insecurity and nil sanitary conditions to combat the deadly Ebola virus for
which there is no known cure?? Is it just love and concern for a less
privileged section or something deeper? How do we define this kind of
commitment?
Among those who were in headlines were Dr. Kent Brantly and co-worker Nancy
Writebol besides a host of others who ventured out to Sierra Leone to help
the locals amid their feeble & crumbling medical infra-structure – 150
trained doctors in a population of 3.5 million. Dr. Brantly & Dr. Writebol
were evacuated after contacting the deadly virus and the happy news now is
that they made it to live another day. But unfortunately, for Spanish priest
Meguel Pajares, part of Catholic order at Monrovia and many other nurses and
health workers – death came on them swiftly and silently even as hundreds of
people continue to succumb to the virus, while the world of medicine is
fighting against time to find a cure. With the recovery of American doctors,
the hope is brighter for the world at large.
Aviation has shrunk the world remarkably. A deadly virus in a remote corner
of the dark continent has to necessarily arouse fear on the other side of
the globe. R & D by American and Canadian pharma companies are working
overtime to find a cure. Experimental drugs with no known trial records on
humans are being administered to the infected including the two doctors who
recovered. The world is watching the West to do the work at enormous cost
and research that demands highest knowledge and intelligence.
Once successful, pharma companies in India will simply copy the formula and
market the drug worldwide at a fraction of the cost of US companies. This is
what we are good at.

Shift the scene to India. There is a news item from Meerut that is equally
remarkable as the inspiring stories from Africa.
Ajay Sharma narrowly cheated death. His recovery from a stroke made him
realise the value of human life. When he came across an HIV infected orphan
child, somewhere within him there was this spark that ignited him to embrace
this child under his care. Over the years, he added one child after another
– yes, all HIV positive – to build up a 12 strong adopted family. Ajay
Sharma and his wife bonded well with their ‘children’ while the
neighbourhood gradually accepted this growing family, after initial
reservations and rejections.

Many such inspiring stories of self-less love and concern happen all around
us, reminding us that for every bullet of hate that kills one in this world,
there is one cartridge filled with love that ensures God lives on within His
creation. As for ordinary mortals, we may not be able to go to such heights
as in above illustrations, but the least we can do is to make a difference
in someone else’s life.. to be the conduit of God’s answer to their prayers
for succour.
